After Life actor Ricky Gervais responded to a fan’s question about the casting on his verified Twitter account and
13-year-old Twitter user, Freya Bird, asked Ricky Gervais how he decides which actors and actresses should play the parts after inspiring by the 2013 comedy-drama, ‘Derek.’ She wrote:
“My question for Ricky Gervais is I lost my mum to breast cancer. Recently I’m 13, and I can really relate the After Life, and that’s how I also came across Derek. My question is, how do you decide which actors and actresses should play the parts and why? Many thanks.”
Gervais gave a succinct answer to her question and said that he either uses people he has worked with before or audition and trying to find the stars of the future. He said:
“Hi Freya, I either use people who I’ve worked with before because I know they have what it takes or I audition and try to find the stars of tomorrow.”
Derek is a British comedy-drama television series written and directed by Ricky Gervais and consists of 2 seasons. Derek Productions Ltd. It was produced for Channel 4 and aired on April 12, 2012. Gervais portrayed a loyal nursing home care assistant who sees only the good in his quirky co-workers as they struggle against prejudice and shrinking budgets to care for their elderly residents.
