Lil Nas X‘s debut and the viral song ‘Old Town Road’ featured Billy Ray Cyrus remained the #1Billboard 100 charts for 17 weeks. The 20-year-old rapper has the longest-running No.1 single in history. His song defeated Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito.” That’s a great success for this young country-rapper. It is also remarkable that he achieved this success with his first song.
During a recent interview with Taste of Country, the country artist Billy Ray Cyrus has revealed that he had to cut his verse about marijuana from ‘Old Town Road’. He said:
“I had on a ball cap it was down low, and she said, ‘Well, hat down and you drove across town.’ She said, ‘You looked like a rockstar,’ so I’m just looking for rhyme words, and I was sitting there holding my guitar, just like so. For some reason, I immediately thought it was funny to say, ‘Baby’s got a habit: diamond rings and marijuana.’ They said, ‘Everything but marijuana.’ And [Jozzy] said, ‘How about Fendi sports bra?’ I thought, ‘Well, it’s probably good because I don’t know what that is.’”
In the finalized version:
“Hat down, cross-town, livin’ like a rockstar/
Spent a lot of money on my brand new guitar/
Baby’s got a habit: diamond rings and Fendi sports bras/
Ridin’ down Rodeo in my Maserati sports car”
Billy Ray Cyrus also revealed his worries about his music. He stated:
“I was singing everything like Nas was doing it, keeping it all down, low register. [Jozzy] asked me to go up and do way up over that. I didn’t know if I could hit the note or not, but once I got out there, it was a lot of fun.”
