Singer and songwriter Halsey made an official statement after the announcement of her Grammy nominations last week, making it clear what she thinks of the voting system for the 2021 Grammy nominations.
As we all know, the Grammy made quite controversial decisions in this year’s nominations. The Weeknd, Halsey, Drake, Kid Cudi, Charlie Puth, and more were among the artists reacting to the 2021 Grammy nominations.
Halsey was one of the artists awaiting nominations for the Manic album, but she predicted that she would not be selected before those nominations were announced.
Halsey wanted to draw attention to what happened behind the scenes of the Grammy by making a statement through her Instagram Stories and brought up allegations of bribery.
Here’s what she stated:
“I’ve been thinking and wanted to choose my words carefully because a lot of people have extended sympathy and apology to me since the Grammy nominations.
The Grammys are an elusive process. It can often be about behind the scenes private performances, knowing the right people, campaigning through the grapevine, with the right handshakes and “bribes” that can be just ambiguous enough to pass as “not-bribes”. And if you get that far, it’s about committing to exclusive TV performances and making sure you help the Academy make their millions in advertising on the night of the show.”
Halsey said it was not about music and culture, and that both she and The Weeknd’s album deserved the Grammy nomination. Halsey, not wanting to defeat the other candidates, said she wanted more transparency and reform. However, despite everything, she was sure that they would make her blacklist.
“Perhaps sometimes it is (!!) but it’s not always about the music or quality or culture. Just wanted to get that off my chest. @theweeknd deserves better, and Manic did too -1- perhaps it’s unbecoming of me to say so but I can’t care anymore. While I am THRILLED for my talented friends who were recognized this year, I am hoping for more transparency or reform. But I’m sure this post will blacklist me anyway.”
