Ian McKellen: ‘I Still Don’t Quite Know How Gandalf Came My Way’ As He Opens Up On His Iconic Role In LOTR

Respected actor Sir Ian McKellen admitted that he still doesn’t quite know how his infamous role Gandafl came his way as he opened up on his iconic role in The Lord of the Rings.

Sir Ian truly found global fame for the first time as the super villain Magneto in the X-Men of the 2000s, and then most iconically as Gandalf a year later in The Fellowship of the Ring truly gained a worldwide reputation. These iconic roles of her are still in the memory of all her fans.

During a recent interview with British GQ, Ian McKellen tried to explain how he got the role of Gandalf. The 81-year-old actor said that he still doesn’t quite know how Gandalf came his way.

Here’s what Ian McKellen stated:

“I still don’t quite know how Gandalf came my way. I think because some of the actors who would have been offered it before me were rather put off by the idea of having to live in New Zealand for a year. ‘Where the hell is that?’ Well, more fool them.”

He also continued and revealed why he got many messages from the LOTR fans. He said:

“I realised the popularity of the books not because I had read them, but I just got so many messages from people who were desperately worried that they were going to see the characters exactly as they had imagined.”
