Iconic director and actor, Spike Lee, has updated his Instagram feed and commemorates Malcolm X as he celebrated the birthday of the civil rights leader.

Malcolm X is one of the most important figures for black Americans and a Muslim human rights advocate. Malcolm X, famous for his statements made in the 60s and for protecting the rights of black people, was assassinated in 1965.

Spike Lee took to Instagram and celebrated Malcolm X’s 96th birthday. He commemorated the black leader by sharing a black and white photo taken by Eve Arnold.

Here’s what Spike Lee wrote:

“Happy Born Day To Malcolm Little, Detroit Red, Malcolm X, El Hajj Malik Shabazz. May 19th, 1925 – February 21st 1965”

In 1992, Spike Lee directed and acted in Malcolm X, starring Denzel Washington. The film is a tribute to the controversial black activist and leader of the struggle for black liberation.
