Why A Crucial Character In George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ Saga Didn’t Appear In GoT?

One of the things that George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga fans were most curious about was why Lady Stoneheart did not appear in Game of Thrones.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss made statements about why they left out such a beloved character from the TV series.

The character Lady Stoneheart, also known as the vengeful Catelyn Stark, is brought back to life by Beric Dondarrion after being killed by the Freyler in the books, and as Lady Stoneheart, heartless and brutal to her name, she takes the lead of the Brotherhood without Banners.

This popular character, who is important in the books, was not included in the series. However, in Martin’s upcoming books she might be one of the leading characters.

According to the statements of Benioff and Weiss, they had three reasons for not involving Lady Stoneheart.

The first reason was the difference between Martin’s storyline and the series storyline.

Here’s what Benioff said:

“Part of the reason we didn’t want to put it in had to do with things coming up in George’s books that we don’t want to spoil [by discussing them].”

The second reason was because even while writing season 3, they knew that resurrection was going to happen in the 5th or 6th season of the series and they thought it should be the only one.

Here’s what Benioff said:

“We knew we had Jon Snow’s resurrection coming up. Too many resurrections start to diminish the impact of characters dying. We wanted to keep our powder dry for that.”

The third reason was that Red Wedding was thought to be a very powerful moment, and they believed that bringing the character back would counteract that scene.

Here’s what Benioff said:

“Catelyn’s last moment was so fantastic, and Michelle is such a great actress, to bring her back as a zombie who doesn’t speak felt like diminishing returns.”
